Aug D Word of Wisdom (Jenkins)

This lesson is going to focus on the Word of Wisdom, how it came to us through the Prophet Joseph Smith, how we can get instructions through our Prophet President Nelson, and how the Holy Ghost can help us make good choices. Talk about good things to put in our bodies. Show the kids pictures of good food from the handout. Draw a picture of your favorite meal or snack. Talk about why there is a "NO" symbol over coffee and tea, cigarettes, and alcohol. Elder Stevenson instructs us to plan in advance what they will do when tempted with alcohol and drugs. "You will find that temptation has less control over you. You will have already made the decision of how you will react and what you will do. You won't need to decide every time." Help the kids choose polite but strong sentences of how to say no. Instruct the kids about how to play "cake walk" - Number the papers (before class?) and spread the pictures face down in a circle (I might take out all the cha...

Aug A Priesthood Power (Jenkins)

Image
For this lesson, I'm going to focus on Priesthood Power. I found this really cute song from The Friend 2018 that has a video. I'm not going to teach the song, but use it to support the pictures on the handout. I'm banking on the kids wanting to watch it again, which I think is a great idea. First we'll talk about all the pictures on the page (I beefed up the amount of pictures to match the video). It's a half sheet because we just have a little table in the room. pdf  here After we talk about each picture, I'll get out the puzzle pieces (precut so no one is decapitating the prophet, they ARE six). Hmm, maybe the kids will be distracted by the puzzle pieces. Perhaps I'll be flexible and let them make the puzzle first. It's double sided because I wanted to point out that because the priesthood was restored, in particular, the Melchizedek Priesthood, we have temples where we use the Priesthood to get even more blessing in our lives as well as move closer t...

July A Bishops (Jenkins)

Image
This lesson focuses on Bishops and how they help a ward. You should also talk about how bishops are called by Heavenly Father through the Spirit and the Priesthood of Jesus Christ.  Main activity I'm going to teach what bishops do by using the video and the handout from Come Follow Me. I added words to this weeks handout. PDF  here -for beginning readers: I'm going to have them put a mini marshmallow or M&M on each picture we talk about, emphasizing each word to listen for in the video. Then when they hear the word, they get to eat the treat on that word/picture. I bet this will be a bit noisy during the video, but I'm going to try to counsel them to do it without talking so we can hear the next clues. -for kids who can't read: I would do the above, but cut the pictures out of an extra page and fold them up to draw out of a cup or hat. The kids or teacher could pull out a picture, one by one, and then they could find the match and eat that treat. Then watch the vid...
